Zucki (2023)
Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem
The concept of "Zucki" originated from an interest in Mark Zuckerberg's persona, Facebook, and its influence on our cultural and social spheres. Zucki is portrayed as a pink, spineless mollusk, symbolizing a delicate and vulnerable entity. Within social media circles, Mark Zuckerberg is sometimes humorously referred to as "Zucki," particularly on Facebook, where meme communities have propagated various anecdotes and theories about his life and character. This has given rise to idiomatic expressions such as "I got zucked" or "I got zucc'd." In Israel, the term "Zuck" has been adapted to "Zucki" within the user community.
Before the ascent of the tech industry, society's "heroes" and influential personalities were frequently associated with war heroes, robust military figures, and militants. However, with the advent of the technological era, individuals such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg have emerged as influential symbols embodying societal authority and dominance.
The artwork also delves into the three-dimensional realm and the impact of technology on our existence. The representation of Zucki donning a computerized "skin" and the symbolic framework of the tube with appendages epitomize the intersection between virtual and physical realities.
Upon observing Zucki's visage, the likeness to Mark Zuckerberg is obscured due to the 3D software manipulation employed to craft the image. The software process entailed integrating three images of Zuckerberg to devise a skin layout that can be applied to 3D avatars, imparting them with a lifelike appearance. The artist found the notion of materializing this virtual skin layout intriguing and sought to explore the disparity between what the computer comprehended and what could be actualized in real life.
ode to facebook (2023)
Installation at the Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem.
On the screen, there's a deep fake video of Mark Zuckerberg's face talking with his voice through an AI program about Talia Elbo, the artist. He explains why he blocked her Facebook account. In the middle of the room, there's a living head. If you talk to it, it will respond, but the head is made out of a UV map of Zuckerberg's face, so he is not recognizable. The head acts as a bot, and there's a projection of the Windows XP wallpaper as if that wallpaper precisely was a prophecy for our times. The monotony of grandma and grandpa (2022)
3D scan that projected on a wall and a CRT TV screen, Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem.
My work explores generational gaps and unspoken family tragedies through the excessive use of technology, drawing inspiration from the world of computer games. The piece features 3D scans of my grandparents, depicted as avatar characters in a computer game, seemingly waiting for something to happen. Two old TV screens display their current use, serving only for nostalgic purposes. A film plays on the screens for an hour, showing each of them doing nothing. This offers a glimpse into these characters' repetitive lives—their appearance hints at some untold story behind their existence.
